![]() There's some big challenges ahead for this technology to overcome.ĬhatGPT is predictive text generation. ![]() We'll have to wait until GPT4 arrives to see what progress looks like. Yes this seems to be world changing technology but actually it's currently the Emporer's New Clothes. It's undoubtedly very fast, very convincing but it's not really an AI assistant unless it's actually an assistant that bullshits and therefore is far from reliable. I've asked ChatGPT questions and it's given me entirely made up scientific studies, when I've asked it to cite the author and DOI of the studies the whole thing is fictional, looks convincing until you look up the studies and find they don't exist. Secondly how do you release a language model to the world without it being influenced/modulated by nefarious actors? How do you trust the data that's being given to you? How does it recognise if it's making stuff up? These might be bigger challenges than we're led to believe from this demonstration of ChatGPT. what is the AI guiding me toward? whatever it thinks is true? which is based on whatever information the supposed objective reasearchers fed it? granted google can and does fudge the results, it’s more of a portal into the internet and not just an interpretation of the internet.ĬhatGPT gives up a glimpse of the perhaps near future but it has at least two major flaws which are inaccuracy of data posited as being correct. Not to mention that google guides you toward actual human experiences that you’re free to interpret how you want. it’s very economical in terms of what it gives compared to what you put into it. The natural language aspect is cute, but IMO part of the power of google is that you can find what you’re looking for just with a few keywords. in one test i did, it was inventing methods in an api that never existed in the first place! i get that the tech is still early, but based on my naive assumptions of how it works, i don’t think it even knows what is correct, it’s just regurgitating patterns. …except that it often gives you stuff that doesn’t work right now/won’t even compile. One of the fundamental assumptions in future(s) studies is that the future is plural rather than singular, that is, that it consists of alternative future(s) of varying degrees of likelihood but that it is impossible in principle to say with certainty which one will occur. If history studies our past and social sciences study our present, what is the study of our future? Future(s) Studies (colloquially called "future(s)" by many of the field's practitioners) is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to hypothesize the possible, probable, preferable, or alternative future(s).
